The Postgraduate Diploma in Business (PGDipBus) will provide you with the confidence and business capabilities to take the next step in your career.
The PGDipBus is a pathway to a masters degree for experienced business professionals who do not have an undergraduate degree. The programme offers four specialisations each of which leads into a related specialist masters: Master of Business Development, Master of Property Practice, Master of Information Governance, and Master of Business Management. The PGDipBus in Business Development, Property Practice and Information Governance are delivered fully online through Auckland Online. The specialisation in Business Management is delivered through a combination of online and on-campus courses.
The PGDipBus develops core business knowledge as well as essential skills in problem solving and solution seeking, providing you with the confidence, business capabilities and a postgraduate qualification to take the next steps in your career. If you want to enhance your employment opportunities, open more doors to future education and business connections, and continue on to masters level study, this programme is for you.
The PGDipBus is for those who want to add business “know-how” to their CV and broaden their role to include management opportunities, or start their own business.
This flexible study pathway builds on professional experience; so if you do not have an undergraduate degree you can still advance your business knowledge and skills. This online business programme is a part-time programme, is designed to be completed in one year, while still allowing you to study and work simultaneously.
The PGDipBus is also a direct pathway to further postgraduate business studies, by stair-casing into 120-point Master’s qualifications.
The Postgraduate Diploma in Business consists of 8 courses. Each course runs over a 10-week quarter, allowing you to take one course at a time and complete this programme in 2 years part-time.
- Quarter 1: 9 January – 25 March
- Quarter 2: 3 April – 24 June (intake for new students)
- Quarter 3: 3 July – 16 September
- Quarter 4: 25 September – 9 December (intake for new students)
The PGDipBus is available in three specialisations through Auckland Online: Business Development, Information Governance and Property Practice. All specialisations start the programme with the same first 60-points comprising four courses, BUSMAN 771-774. After completing these courses, you will complete an additional 4 courses within your chosen specialisation.
Please note that a fourth specialisation, Business Management, is delivered through a combination of online and on-campus delivery. The first 60 points are delivered through Auckland Online (BUSMAN 771-774) and the final 60-points are available at the City campus and South Auckland campus from Quarter 2, 2022. Note this option is only available to New Zealand citizens and residents.
Part I: Core Business Courses
|BUSMAN 771||Business in Society||Examines the role of business in society, how businesses interact with government and other institutions, and how businesses can contribute to solving the key challenges of the twenty-first century.||15|
|BUSMAN 772||Organisations and Culture||Explores the role that managers play in building the structure and culture of organisations. Examines key issues in organisational design, culture, behaviour and structures. Develops skills in managing multigenerational and multicultural workforces.||15|
|BUSMAN 773||Effective Decision Making||Techniques and tools to support and facilitate managerial decision-making. Builds skills in understanding organisations and their problems through numerical analysis.||15|
|BUSMAN 774||The Global Economy and NZ||Considers the nature of the global economy and the opportunities for small trading nations such as New Zealand. Examines key issues, global trade, and how governmental policies impact businesses. Explores how New Zealand can become a more productive and prosperous nation.||15|

*Please note that the Auckland Online courses are scheduled on rotation, so your course progression and selections will be largely predetermined. In instances where there are specific course prerequisites within the programme itself, we will ensure that you are enrolled in the correct courses to achieve your goals.

As a graduate of the Postgraduate Diploma in Business (PGDipBus), you will gain the following key skills:
- Demonstrate a specialist understanding of theory and practice in your specialist field and apply this in current management contexts.
- Effectively synthesise and evaluate ideas and information from multiple sources to develop coherent evidence-based arguments.
- Apply appropriate problem-solving and analytical methods and techniques to solve business and management problems.
- Work effectively in teams and engage diverse audiences through professional and ethical communication skills.
- Demonstrate effective self-management skills.
- Recognise the significance of the principles underpinning the Treaty of Waitangi and consider issues related to diversity, equity and sustainability.
