This course is part of the Master of Business Management (MBM) and may also be taken as a course-only study option.
It explores the importance of data analytics and data visualisation in business contexts. Hypothesis testing, fundemental Excel functions, statistical modelling and data interpretation will be covered in the weekly modules. By the end of the course, you will have advanced your analytics skills and built capacity for effective data-based decision-making.
Upon completion, students who wish to progress their studies further towards a formal qualification may count this course towards the Master of Business Management in Strategic Management (entry criteria and time limits apply).
Course Structure
Over the 10 weeks of this course, you will be going through the following 9 modules and 5 assignments.
The assessments will be 3 individual online quizzes (15% each), an individual case study test (25%), and a group project (30%).
Introduction to Business Analytics
Highlights the importance of data analytics, types of data, and fundamental Excel functions.
Descriptive Analytics through Data Visualization
Focuses on the importance of visual data representation, including creating charts, histograms, and cross-tabulations.
Descriptive Analytics through Statistical Measures
Covers data central tendency, dispersion, shape, and association, emphasizing statistical interpretation.
Sampling and Estimation 1
Introduces normal distributions, point and interval estimates, the Central Limit Theorem, and methods for estimating population means.
Sampling and Estimation 2
Explores confidence intervals, the use of z- and t-scores, and the rationale behind interval estimation.
Hypothesis Testing 1
Provides foundational understanding of hypotheses, hypothesis testing procedures, and interpretation of results.
Hypothesis Testing 2
Addresses two-sample tests, including independent and paired sample hypotheses.
Linear Regression Analysis
Introduces linear regression, interpretation of results, and model construction using Excel, including simple and multiple regressions.
Advanced Linear Regression
Covers regression with categorical variables, interaction effects, and log-transformations for interpretation.
Upon successful completion of the course you will:
- Be awarded with 15 credit points from the University of Auckland
- Have the option to take your credit into the Master of Business Management in Strategic Management (entry criteria and time limits apply)

What is a Certificate of Proficiency (CoP)?
A Certificate of Proficiency (CoP) is a course-only study option that allows you to take a course at the University of Auckland, without studying a full programme. It is a good option for those who want to study short-term or to test whether a subject is something they wish to pursue more of in the future.
Does the course enable me to take further study at the University?
If you decide to progress your studies further towards a full qualification, you can apply to reassign the points from your CoP to the Master of Business Management (entry criteria and time limits apply).
How many course credits will I attain upon completion of the course?
Upon completion of the course, you will be awarded with 15 credit points from the University of Auckland.
Do I get a certificate at the end?
As a Certificate of Proficiency is not a formal qualification, you will not be able to graduate with it or receive a graduation certificate. Your results will be recorded on your official academic transcript, providing evidence of your study.
